CORPUS CHRISTI -- After becoming the first powerlifter from Stockdale ever to compete in a state meet, Ashley Valadez can now give her tired muscles a well-earned rest. Valadez competed in the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association state meet here March 19, and returned home to Stockdale with fourth-place honors -- finishing ahead of several of the state’s top female powerlifters.

Valadez began the 2011 powerlifting season with a first-place finish in Yorktown. She turned in a bench press of 90 pounds, a squat of 200 pounds, and a dead lift of 215 pounds -- impressive numbers for a petite young woman who tips the scales at less than 105 pounds.

In her second meet of the season, Valadez earned second-place honors in Poteet, despite having improved her three-lift total by 50 pounds. She increased her bench press to 100 pounds, managed 215 pounds on the squat rack, and powered up an impressive 240 pounds in the dead lift.

Valadez won her second gold medal of the year during the third meet as she maintained her overall weight total of 555 pounds. She then qualified for state competition in Medina Valley as she lifted 575 pounds, lifting 95 in the bench press, 225 on the squat rack, and 255 pounds in the dead lift.

In the Region V meet held March 5, Valadez increased her total to 590 pounds, as she finished first among all Class 2A competitors in her weight class. She took her bench press back up to 100 pounds, lifted 230 pounds in the squat, and recorded a dead lift of 260 pounds.

In the state meet March 19, Valadez added another 10 pounds, recording a total of 600 pounds in three lifts, while continuing to compete in the 105-pound class. Valadez recorded a bench press of 100 pounds, a squat of 235 pounds, and a dead lift of 265 pounds -- more than 2-1/2 times her own body weight.

“Ashley had a great year -- she only got stronger as the year went on,” said Stockdale powerlifting Coach Michael Enriquez. “I am very proud of her and of all her accomplishments.”
