Robert Lee “Bobby” McDonald Jr. went to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 15, 2011, in his residence in Floresville, Texas, at the age of 62.

He was born Feb. 8, 1949, in Uvalde.

One of the happiest times in his life was spent with his grandfather near Reagan Wells, where he rode horses and spent a lot of time outdoors. He just loved his grandfather and the time they spent together.

Bobby met his future bride, Linda Jean, one summer between their junior and senior years in high school. He transferred to her school, South San High School in San Antonio, where they dated throughout their senior year. The couple married Oct. 14, 1967.

They were blessed with two children, Rachelle and Robert Christopher.

Bobby, a Vietnam veteran, served 22 years with the U.S. Army. Known to his Army buddies as “Mac,” he retired from the military in 1990. He took his children sightseeing around the different Army posts where they lived -- to castles in Germany and on “volksmarches,” where he carried his young son on his shoulders, and camping at Mount Ranier in Washington state. He loved his country and always supported our troops.

He loved his family. His extended family members, such as cousins, were like brothers and sisters to Bobby. One of his greatest gifts was making others “feel like family.” In his last illness, Army buddies and friends traveled from Wyoming and Hawaii to be with him.

He enjoyed helping others. When his children were young, he was always fixing a bicycle for someone.

Bobby loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. He shared his enjoyment with his children and grandchildren. He loved to go fishing with his son on his boat.

Bobby enjoyed drinking his favorite beverage, Dr Pepper, and enjoyed a good joke -- although he never was any good at telling them.

His greatest joy was his grandchildren, watching them play and grow. Bobby loved having his family together, whether for dinner, camping, or just watching television.

He will be remembered as a very patient, gentle, and loving man who enjoyed his family, and felt there was little in life more precious than a child.

Bobby is survived by his wife of more than 43 years, Linda Jean McDonald of Floresville; his daughter, Rachelle Ehlert and husband Steve; his son, Robert Christopher McDonald and wife Shannon; grandchildren Adam Christopher, Sarah Anne, Mathew Ryan, Kayla Lea, and Tristan Thomas; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 23, from 6-8 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

Graveside services with military honors will take place Thursday at 9:45 a.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, with Pastor Michael Mumme officiating.

A memorial service will follow Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the Floresville United Methodist Church, with a reception afterward in the church’s fellowship hall.
