You have lived in your modest house for 50 years where you raised your children and lived with your spouse until their death. You are alone, physically incapacitated, yet you are very independent and value your independent live. Your only income is a small social security amount every month. Your house is close to where a new shopping mall has recently been built. The new shopping mall is the cause of your property taxes on your house rising from $100 per month to $500 per month. Yet, your social security check is for About $1000. So, over night almost your expenses have increased 40% yet you have no means or ability to increase your revenue. What would you do? Stop taking your medication and cut out most of your food products except the most basic items? Even that would probably not make up the difference. So, obviously the only alternative thing to do is sell your house that you have lived in for many years and move into a government housing project or a very basic mobile home etc. All this just cause the government needs a few extra bucks? And, you don't believe we should have exemptions for folks like this? If you don't, you are one low lifing sorry piece of human excrement!@!@!!!!!

I am certainly not wealthy and not young but I do know right from wrong and our current tax system is wrong.

Senior, the fair tax plan would be fine with me. Huckabee endorsed it when he was running, wonder if he'd stick with it for real..
There seems to be NO serious intent to reform the tax code- its insane.

I think the fair tax plan calls for a 23% consumption tax- im not a fan of that one time exemption they have; i abhor all exemptions: i cant even understand why we give exemptions for dependants- if someone wants to breed i dont need to pay for it.

Everyone should pay the exact same rate: everyone, no exceptions, no exemptions.

That seems simple to me but obviously you are wealthy and never have trouble paying for your medications, your food/water/electric bill....but, you may not believe this (whispering now)....there are some folk that have a difficult time paying for all those things and anything that is assessed in taxes greatly reduces old folk and some others ability to pay their everyday expenses. I think that the government spends too much and taxes too much, but in the real world there simple are a few people that need a little help.

I've heard some pretty smart people discuss a flat income tax (somewhere around 7% I believe) without any deductions...those smart people believe that everyone will contribute something and the amount of taxes taken in will be sufficient to adequately run the government and the tax code will be extremely simple. Personally, that sounds good to me if it will work.

I actually don't particularly care for property taxes at all, I do think a consumption tax or flat tax is appropriate. If a Billionaire only pays the same percentage as you- I think thats just fine.

YOU think a billionaire should cover your taxes, you think some people should be exempt-- you want to "spread the wealth around" and im a lib... pfft.

Why is this problem so hard to understand for some people? The problem is GOVERNMENT SPENDS TOO MUCH! State and national. Old people, farmers, ranchers, nobody wants maore taxes, on themselves. Please understand that I would like to see the property based tax system done away with and a sales tax applied equally and without exemption. Then everyone would be united against government spending. Once the spending is controlled the tax would be reduced. No one wants higher taxes, we all want an exemption to lower our taxes and make others pay our share, not fair, but there it is. While this kind of thinking is prevalent the tax system will never be changed.

You're right....make those old and disabled people pay the full amount...who gives a rats behind if they have to sell their houses cause they can't afford the taxes. They've paid taxes all their lives and it's only right for the state to keep getting that money from them...if they can't pay up then kick their butts out on the street. The same for those family farms and ranches...who cares if they have to sell that farm their great great grandfather started. The farm is now worth a lot of money cause of the expanding suburbs and thos dead beat farmers should pay the full amount or get out and move to town for work.

Just cause they are old, retired or trying to make a living on inherited farm land..they must continue paying the full amount all their lives or get out!

Obviously changing the tax system is going to cause outcry, all changes do. Perhaps we should look at it this way: government, both state and national, needs enough money to cover it's spending. The more it spends the more it must take from it's citizens. The total amount needed spread equally among all the taxpayers. Exemptions or exceptions shift the tax burden, which was originally the amount needed pro-rated equally among the payers, to larger amounts due from those without the exemptions and less from those with exemptions. I would bet that most of those receiving exemptions now are not in favor of welfare. The rationale being that welfare recipient's are receiving a benefit at the expense of someone else. Yet the very exemption they are receiving is at another taxpayer's expense. Why is this fair? If welfare is wrong because it must be paid by other taxpayer's then so is the exemption. Please explain the difference.

If, for example, all taxing was sales related do you not think that would be better than the impossible mess we have now? Sure everyone would have to pay. Who would you exempt? All pay. Politicians, dope-dealers, lawyers, bankers, farmers, ranchers. Everyone. Want to pay less. Buy less. You control your tax. Those with higher incomes buy more and would pay more in taxes. What is wrong with that. Are you saying that certain prople cannot make it on their own without tax loopholes? How did people in those occupations make it before the loopholes? Then your argument is with those in government who are spending too much, is it not. Lower spending, lower taxes. Think! The current system is designed to fragment the taxpayers into groups of those with exemptions and/or exceptions and those without, causing them to fight among themselves so as not to unite and demand a fair and equitable taxing system. Seems to be working does it not?

Right, we do have some segments of society that have tax breaks....The elderly have disability exemptions, and the elderly can have their school taxes frozen so that they can afford to live in their own homes in their last years, and farmers and ranchers and anyone else that is seriously involved in agriculture have exemptions for Ag operations so that they will not be forced out of their farms by high taxes.... There are many farms and ranches that have been in families for generations but with encroaching suburbs they would see there property taxes rise so high that they would have to sell their farms/ranches to pay the property taxes. Yes, indeed we need to make those cruel and evil disabled selfish folk and farm and ranches operators pay their fair share or kick them out of their property. Even if they can no longer afford to pay the full amount of taxes because they are old and feeble and can't work or live on inherited property that is in the way of suburban growth...that's their problem not mine.

And, sales taxes are historically unfair. It's terribly unfair that 'everyone' has to pay the exact same sales tax....that billionaire that buys a $1 million yacht and that derelict that buys a burger have to pay exactly the same sales tax rate...how unfair.

Now, the Federal Taxes...tht's a whole different matter.

Marcelina Muse, you will find out just as I have that anything Alvin believes is going to be bogus once it is analyized a little. And, the reason is because he belongs to that clan called 'liberal' that believes spending more by the Feds will create jobs. They believe that micromanaging and totally controlling health care will lower insurance premiums. They also believe that the more you tax, the more money in tax revenue will come in. They also believe we are terrible to kill civilians in Iraq but have not qualms about killing 100s of thousands of babies in the USA (abortion) every year.

So, anything Alvin is for is going to be based somehow in fairyland and have fairy dust sprinkled all over it.

I am amazed that I have to agree with Alvin as to the root cause of this mess, state and national. The root cause is our taxing system. It is designed to favor certain groups. Those with the strongest lobbies. We MUST change our taxing system. We must have a system that taxes everyone without exception nor exemption. Then everyone has a dog in the fight. With the current state system certain property owners carry most of the burden, others have exemptions of some kind or other. Why? Do we not have anyone smart enough to work out a taxing system, both state and national, that would provide adequate funding while being fair to all. Of course we do. But the howls and gnashing of teeth from those receiving exemptions or exceptions would be terrible to behold. There must also be changes in our educational system. Costs there are out of control, which might be palatable if the end product was increasing in quality. It is not. We need leaders, both at the state and national levels that have the guts to really address and solve these problems. More taxes and more spending is not the answer.

4th Gen, I am not a defeatist; I am mad as hell. Perry caused most of this financial mess. Rick and his gang drastically cut corporate taxes in 2006, without cutting spending. Then they granted AG-Exemptions for land used as private game preserves so their rich cronies could buy private hunting grounds and pay little taxes on them; thus denying school districts that revenue. Those same AG-exemptions on real estate taxes are not realistic; that also denies school revenue. I pay the same taxes for my $225,000 home that a land owner pays on a ranch worth $3,000,000; that is not fair to you or to me. I am mad as hell that the TEA party and corporations don't want to pay their fair share of taxes. And then when times get tough, they want to balance the budget on our school districts.

If you think teaching school is so easy, go volunteer to be a substitute teacher. Anyone who thinks we didn't need those 100,000 teachers is not facing reality. What are we suppose to do with the 85,000 new students Texas will get over the next two years.

I have no doubt that we can "have school" with 40 kids in a classroom. However, if we want to teach them anything, we need to have no more than 25. Obviously, our generation proved that big classes don't work, for it produced idiots like you and me.

Bottom line: The old quote is right. We get what we pay far. Texas is already last of the 50 states in what we fund eduction...and we are going to cut it 12% more???

One last thing. Before you accuse me of caving into Germany and Japan, please know that I pull two tours of duty on the ground in the jungles of Nam. I have earned a right to express an opinion whether you like my opinion or not.

"Old as Dirt"...college are not, you are also as "dumb as dirt"...you read my comment and did not understand anything I said. And, do you think the cuts will be permanent? Of course not, silly willy! Drastic measures have to be taken to help cure drastic situations. And, since education probably accounts for close to 50% of the total budget, why should education be exempt. And, throwing money at a problem hardly ever solves it. For instance, the district where I lived opened a new $85,000,000 high school this last fall...they could have postponed that operation for 3 or 4 years until the economy, hopefully, rights itself. Bottom line, you don't spend money if you don't have it. And, if education has to cut back on a lot of things, so be it. If we can cut 100,000 teachers from the budget, there's a good possibility that they weren't needed in the first place. Sorry that anyone has to have their budget cut, but during dire times, dire things have to be done. And, if those kids have to go to school in cramped schools, learn in classrooms with 30 to 40 pupils, double up on computers, etc etc etc, then tough luck, that's life. And, 'being old as dirt' you should know that....no one is going to be permanently hurt....if parents have concerns for their kids education, then they spend an extra hour every day helping them with assignments instead of *itching that the system has had to cut budgets and teachers, etc.

I'm really, really fed up with defeatist attitudes like yours...If you had been running WWII we would have surrended within a week to the Germans, Japanese, and Italians. I think I'm going to go mad with all the idiocy out there!

How does the State of Texas cut 100,000 (projected) teachers without damaging the quality of education we deliver to our youth? It can't.

For those of us born before WWII started, we can all get lost in the good ol' days when we had 40 kids in our classrooms, did not have air conditioning, and in my case, we had a wood cook stove in our family home in western Texas. But those were not the good ol' days for everyone. In fact, for many of my school days we had no blacks or browns in my school because they had a shack in the flats that they used for a school house. In fact, we DID NOT get a better education than the kids today; we just like to brag that we did. Where is the proof that we did? Don't believe me; go take one of those state mandated high school exams my grand children take...and then publish your scores in this paper. The drop out rate back when we were in school was close to 50%, now it is a fourth of that. I am not sure how this argument rolled around to computers, but since you brought it up, let me address that. Library books are great, but I recently watched my grandson for three of four nights gather data from dozens books on line, including the Library of Congress, in the time it would have taken his parents to drive him to the nearest public library. (By the way those old cards are no longer in use in libraries; those card files are now all computerized). His research paper was competed in short order and he made an A. Computers means efficient use of time.

As far as math, I am very good with my college days slide rule, but why should I drag out that relic when a $9 Wal-Mart computer will give me the answer in blink...and its more accurate than my slide rule. I don't care if you value my opinion or not, (apparently you value only your own) but for you to view our past with rose colored glasses is a foolish exercise in nostalgia. Get with the program, 4th Gen, this is not 1952!

Cutting spending is fine, but, until we fix the income tax system nothing will really get solved. When only half the people pay income taxes the fix to budget problems is obvious.

The income tax system hides welfare programs within it, every year millions of americans get their so called " refund" doled out to them and you womder why we have a deficit.

Start a flat tax or fair tax movement for real, or stop wasting our time with distracting meaningless budget talk. The tax system is the problem.

"old as dirt"...I don't believe we are balancing the budget on the backs of kids...I didn't have any of the stuff kids today have...we didn't even have air conditioned class rooms and we always had about 30 or 32 kids in class rooms and I feel like I got a better education than kids do today...so don't give me that old crock of horse manure about the 'poor kids' having to suffer cause of balancing the budget...that's just another excuse for kids not doing well in school...what is more important to education is the quality of teachers, parents participation in their kids education, and discipline in the classroom. Kids today don't need computers in all phases of their education...what's wrong with using library books for research like humankind has done for 3000 or 4000 years? Sorry, I don't value your opinion on this! I work everyday allday with computers and they are a fantastic tool and every kid should have a good dose of computer literacy, but computers should not take the place of everything in education. Do kids even learn how to do math the old fashion way anymore or do they use calculators for most computations? The same with research...kids need to learn the basics of research and how to do it the old fashion way by researching books, magazine, and articles that are on file in libraries. And, when that is learned, it is ok to introduce computers into the research process.

Sorry, but I do not believe we are shortchanging education with the amount of funds being used, I believe education is being shortchanged by other deficiencies.

One of my college classmates is a farmer near Lubbock, and he bragged at an alumni meeting recently that his 2010 US farm subside checks were nearly $800,000...and he is one of his county's leaders in the TEA Party. That is $800,000 of our tax money in his pocket, and the TEA Party crowd screams cut taxes and are willing to reduce our nation's schools to the level of those in Mexico. Go figure???
