Following is the first-place entry written by Joyce Mainz.

Dear WCN Staff:

Like one of George’s Strait’s songs, we first met way back in third grade (1962). But instead of in the classroom, we were playing ball with St. Benedict’s CYO. He was on the baseball team and I was on the softball team. While I had the biggest crush on him, his real love was BASEBALL!

Years later (1969), Robby and I went to Sam Houston High School. I was considered a Surfer/Hippie and he was a Kicker/Cowboy. We would write letters to one another and pass them to each other while in the hallways, until one day he wrote me a note saying, “I had the best looking legs he ever saw.” I wrote him back a note saying, “DROP DEAD!” Even though he meant it as a compliment, I took it as him being a jerk! Soon after he transferred to East Central High School, while I stayed at Sam Houston High School. We continued writing letters to one another, but gradually we quit, as we both started dating other people.

Believe me, opposites do attract, and as fate has it, we remet in 1974 at Ponderosa Bowling Alley. I was talking to my very best friend Mary, and Robby walked through the door and I said to Mary, “Oh my Gosh!” “Is that Robby Mainz?” You can ask her to this day, she said after Robby walked through the door and once Joyce started talking with him it was like she wasn’t in the room any longer. I still don’t know whatever happened to Mary that day. Robby and I had some reminiscing to do, and my heart was a pounding!

On April 10, 1976 we got married in St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. We promised in front of God, family, and friends, “What God has joined, men must not divide.” We have had good times and bad times. There have been times where Robby probably would have wanted to kill me and visa versa, but love has conquered all evil. You have to work at your marriage. You have to Respect and Love one another. Don’t give up over your fights! Robby tells our sons, when Momma is happy everyone is happy. I say, “Happy Wife, Happy Life!”

We’ve known one another for almost 49 years, I don’t know if we’ll live to celebrate 50 years of married life together, but I hope so. In the mean time, come April 10, 2011, we will be married 35 years. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ROBBY, I LOVE YA!!

JOYCE
