The Floresville Jaguar softball team hasn’t exactly had the season its members had hoped for, but there is still time for the team to turn things around.

After a good non-district showing against the competition, the Jags have suffered a little through the past few games.

Floresville opened its District 30-4A schedule with a 4-1 loss to Gregory-Portland. The Lady Wildcats came out strong in the top of the first inning to score 3 runs, and added a fourth run in the fifth. Floresville scratched one run in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t climb back into the game. Kasey Tieken, Dana Guerra, and Katie Moore each had hits in the game, and Guerra was credited with driving in the lone Jaguar run.

Floresville then traveled to Victoria for its second district game, but once again fell, this time in a close, extra-innings game with the Victoria West Lady Warriors.

The Jags struck first in the contest, scoring 2 runs in the top of the third inning. West came back in the bottom of the inning, though, and scored 2 big runs of its own. After a scoreless fourth inning, Floresville tacked on another 2 runs in the top of the fifth. West responded with 1 run in the bottom of the inning, and Floresville took a 4-3 lead into the sixth inning.

The Jags scratched another run in the top of the sixth to give them a 5-3 advantage, but West came through in the bottom of the seventh with 2 runs, tying the game and sending it into extra innings. The teams remained deadlocked throughout the eighth inning and the top of the ninth, but Victoria West got the run it needed in the bottom of the ninth to take the 6-5 win.

Guerra led the Jaguar bats with four hits in the game, followed by Tieken with three hits and two stolen bases, and Kaitlin Montoya with two hits. Jaylee Fernandez and Victoria Bayer also recorded hits in Victoria.

The Jags closed out last week with another loss at home, this time by the score of 8-5 against Beeville Jones.

After 2-1/2 scoreless innings, the Jags struck first and scored 2 runs to take the early lead. After retiring the side, however, Beeville stormed back with 4 runs in the top of the fourth inning and 3 more in the top of the fifth to take a 7-2 lead.

Floresville got back on track by adding 1 run in the bottom of the fifth, and 2 more in the bottom of the sixth, but still trailed 7-5 heading into the final inning of regulation. The Lady Trojans added an insurance run in the seventh, and were able to hold the Jags at bay, ensuring a victory by the score of 8-5.

The Jaguars were scheduled to play at home March 29 against the Victoria East Lady Titans, and will travel to Port Lavaca this Friday, April 1, to face the Calhoun Lady Sandcrabs. Both games are set to begin at 7 p.m.
