POTH -- The Poth Pirette softball team continued to roll in District 29-2A play last week, as it dispatched the Stockdale Lady Brahmas and the Luling Lady Eagles.
On Tuesday, March 22, Poth Head Coach Carilee Robbins and the Pirettes welcomed Ashley West and Wilson County rival -- the Stockdale Lady Brahmas. The first inning looked promising for the Lady Brahmas, with shortstop Ashley Valdez’s leadoff walk, followed by a stolen second base. A sacrifice bunt by catcher Andye Romero then moved Valdez to third base with only one out. However, when Valdez tried to beat out a hard ground ball to Pirette shortstop Kayla Boening, the Lady Brahmas’ scoring opportunity was halted. Boening fired the ball to freshman catcher Charity Fuller, who blocked the plate and tagged Valdez for the second out.
For the Lady Brahmas, that was as close to scoring as they would come. Pirette senior pitcher Monica Cavazos found her mark from there and overwhelmed a very formidable Lady Brahma lineup. Following the play at the plate, Cavazos struck out 13 of the next 20 batters and only allowed two to reach base.
Lady Brahma pitcher Kristy Vela had a very solid performance. In six innings, Vela gave up only four hits, struck out five batters, and gave up only 2 earned runs. Six walks were also issued, though, and the Pirette offense, led by senior Kayla Boening, was able to take advantage of solid hitting and timely Lady Brahma errors to give Cavazos more than enough support. Boening, who had three of those hits, going 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored, continued to display her familiar leadership role -- keeping her teammates focused and producing runs. Kelsey Garcia and Destiny Rodriguez also each scored 2 runs, and Lindsey Lyssy added 1 run, giving the Pirettes a 7-0 victory.
Later that week, on Friday, March 25, a very late venue change had the Pirette fans, fortunate enough to be informed, scrambling to get to Luling, as the Lady Eagles had originally been scheduled to travel to Poth.
An unexpected bus ride did nothing to rattle the poise of the Pirettes, though, including star pitcher Monica Cavazos. Cavazos, who had only given up 2 runs in the past five games, continued to dominate opposing batters in Luling. She gave up only two hits, walked one, and struck out 11 batters en route to her third straight District 29-2A shutout. The Pirette offense was equally as impressive, as the bats were hot, allowing Poth to tee off for 15 hits in five innings.
A scoring onslaught began when Heather Rocha was driven in by fellow senior Kaylee Lyssy, and her stand-up triple to right-centerfield in the top of the first inning. Although Cavazos only needed that 1 run, Lyssy and the Pirettes were far from through at the plate. Lyssy would continue to hammer the ball, as she went 4 for 4 with two triples and 3 RBIs. Sophomore third baseman Ryann Boening emerged as a threat, striking the ball hard with two hits and 2 RBIs.
The lopsided 14-0 five-inning victory had the Pirettes on top of the district standings. This week, the Pirettes were scheduled to travel to Marion and Nixon to take on the Bulldogs and Lady Mustangs, while the Stockdale Lady Brahmas face Nixon and the Brooks Academy Tigers to end the first round of district play.
