CORPUS CHRISTI -- The Poth High School girls powerlifting team was represented at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association state meet in Corpus Christi March 19 by Jessica Coronado, Daniella Noguez, and Antoniette Price. All three lifters turned in strong performances, and the trio took home a state championship, along with fourth- and sixth-place finishes.
Daniella Noguez, a junior at Poth, officially powered up a total of 755 pounds to finish sixth in her weight class. She managed a 145-pound bench press, and recorded a squat and dead lift of 305 pounds each -- more than twice her own body weight.
“Daniella competed great, but an error with the scoring table, specifically with the lifter card, took away her third squat attempt -- which was a good lift,” said Poth Powerlifting Coach Tim Bordovsky. “If the error had not occurred, Daniella would have been pulling 320 on her last dead lift for the third-place medal. Instead, she was pulling 335 on her last dead lift ... and narrowly missed the lift when she lost grip of the bar just before lock out.”
Teammate and senior powerlifter Antoniette Price also had a good state meet showing, as she finished fourth in her class with a total of 805 pounds -- not bad for a lifter in just her first year of competition. Price turned in lifts of 160 pounds in bench press and 310 pounds on the squat rack, and powered up a dead lift of 335 pounds.
“Antoniette Price set personal records in each lift,” Bordovsky said. “She finished with a fourth-place medal after coming into the meet ranked 10th among her competition. We will miss her next year.”
The third competitor from Poth to compete in the state powerlifting meet was junior Jessica Coronado -- and she did not disappoint. Coronado lifted a total of 765 pounds, more than enough to be crowned State Champion in the 132-pound class. Coronado, who weighs less than 130 pounds herself, turned in a bench press of 140 pounds, a squat of 295 pounds, and a whopping dead lift of 330 pounds.
“Jessica set personal records in the bench, dead lift, and total, having her best meet yet,” Bordovsky said. “She finished as the Class 2A State Champion for the 132-pound class -- beating the second-place lifter by 25 pounds.
“She did a tremendous job and is a fierce competitor,” he added. “Jessica worked extremely hard and earned the title of ‘champion’ well before March 19th.”
Bordovsky was excited about the meet, but was sure to give his athletes the credit they deserve.
“I can’t say enough about these three girls and how they have worked and represented Poth,” Bordovsky said. “They are great kids and they have great attitudes. We are going to miss Netty next year, but Jess and Danny will be back one more time with their eyes set on a pair of state titles.”
