The selected candidate will work directly under the Border Prosecution Unit Initiative dedicated to Human Trafficking/Human Smuggling. Responsibilities of the position include working closely with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, felony intake, preparation of cases for grand jury, negotiating pleas and representation of the State of Texas in pretrial proceedings, as well as in criminal bench trials and jury trials in District Court. All applicants must be a graduate of an accredited law school and licensed to practice law by the State of Texas and have a minimum of fifteen (15) years prosecutorial experience and extensive felony trial experience. Jose S. “Big Joe” Escobedo of Floresville, Texas, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2011, in Floresville at the age of 66 years, 9 months, and 2 days. He was born in Floresville on June 19, 1944, to Hilario and Louisa Escobedo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Louisa Escobedo; and his brother, Emilio Escobedo.

Jose is survived by his wife, Carmen Escobedo of Floresville; his children, Betty Jo Ryan and husband John, Mary Jane Escobedo, and Jose G. Escobedo and wife Maria Presas; his grandchildren, Breanda Bailey, Louisa Mae Escobedo, Jose Robert Hilario Escobedo, Savanna Jo Escobedo, and Hillary Virginia Escobedo.

A visitation was held on Tuesday, March 22, at 5 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A Mass was celebrated on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville with the Rev. Andrzej Waszczenko officiating.

Interment followed in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Floresville.

Pallbearers were Jose Robert Hilario “Baby Joey” Escobedo, Jesse Zamora, Jesse Ximenez, Octaviano Griego, Larry Bauer, and Fernando Sanchez.
