Buyers at the Nixon-Smiley Livestock Show and Sale on March 12 did not let the hard economic times stop them from bidding on animals, baked goods, and crafts, setting some new records for bids.

“I haven’t seen prices this high in a long time,” said auctioneer Joey Tomlinson about how projects were selling at the March 12 sale.

The auction totaled $96,412, exceeding last year’s sale by $11,802. Add-on totals as of March 13 were $9,840, with add-ons continuing to pour in.

Totals from the March 11-12 combined sales made a grand total of $106,252. The estimated total with add-ons is $116,000.

Brooke Hester’s grand champion market goat garnered her $3,300, setting a new record.

New exhibitors showing for the first time earning top positions include Santos Pompa, grand champion rabbits; William Hodge, reserve champion turkey; and Conley Boatright, grand champion market hog.

Two Nixon-Smiley seniors took the top two positions in the broiler division. John Elkins and Keith Clifton exhibited the grand and reserve champions, respectively.

Katey Aguirre garnered a reserve champion title with her round bale rack in the ag mechanics division.

Nixon’s own Erin Wheat, 2011-12 Old Chisholm Trail Drivers Queen, assisted with the presentation of trophies and awards.
