From: George Rodriguez
President San Antonio Tea Party

The federal debt continues to climb at the rate of $5 billion per day. The ability to address this catastrophic trend will take courage and imagination on the part of all elected officials in Washington, D.C. If OUR (emphasis on “we the people”) political leadership doesn’t take immediate and profound action soon, we could be in an irreversible flood of debt.

Continuing Resolutions (CR) now used by the majority party can be refined to do the much needed liposuction upon the body of the federal government. To this end the Tea Party supports the following tactics to assist with this delicate but demanded procedure. The following should be adopted as soon as possible in order to reduce the risk of fiscal crisis as cited by the Congressional Budget Office last July:

Each CR must contain in it the involuntary, non-compensated furlough of whole Federal departments for not less than one week. To that end it is recommended that the next CR contain a furlough for the entire Department of Labor. This will do two things; first it will save the taxpayer’s money, second it will demonstrate to the public that there are federal departments that do not affect their lives whatsoever and therefore are un-needed.

The next CR should furlough the Department of Education for one week. This will prove to the public that schools don’t shut down if the Dept. of Education is not at work. This should be followed by the Department of Transportation with the exception of the FAA.

With each subsequent CR a new departments or agencies must be furloughed.

Here are good examples of portions of the federal government which can be furloughed with no effect upon the health and safety of the American public:

Dept. of Commerce with the exception of the National Weather Service
Dept. of Energy with the exception of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Department of Agriculture with the exception of USDA Food Safety Inspectors
Department of the Interior with the exception of the Bureau of Mines
