Tigers top Sandcrabs in Port Lavaca
PORT LAVACA -- It certainly wasn’t an easy win at the coast last week for Floresville, but with some resilience and a few well-timed hits, the Tiger baseball team was able to overcome the Calhoun Sandcrabs by the final score of 5-4.
Drew Clements started on the hill for Floresville and threw 4-2/3 innings before Matthew Roe came on in relief. Drew Clements gave up just four hits, fanned three batters, and allowed 1 earned run before Tiger Head Coach Dennis Schlueter made the switch.
The Tigers and Sandcrabs were tied at 0-0 after two innings of play. In the top of the third, though, Floresville broke the stalemate as it put a pair of runs on the board.
Sam Bryan got the offense rolling for Floresville as he reached base on an error. Garrett Pollok then ripped a single for the Tigers, and Micah Clements moved both runners into scoring position as he reached base on another Sandcrab error. Robert Silva then came to the plate and hit a single that scored both Bryan and Pollok.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers added another 2 runs to the board. Cole Allen started things off with a double to lead things off. Luke Laskowski came in to run for Allen, and Shawn Luna moved Laskowski to third on a sharply hit single. Bryan kept things going for the Tigers as he scored Laskowski with a single of his own, and then Jonathan Parker scored Bryan -- thanks in part to an error by the Calhoun outfield.
The game-winning run for Floresville came in the top of the fifth inning, as Drew Clements hit a lead-off single, then later crossed home plate on a double by Bryan.
Calhoun scored 1 run in the third inning, 1 in the fourth, and 2 in the fifth inning, but couldn’t overcome the Tiger defense. The Sandcrabs were threatening in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Floresville defense ended the Calhoun rally with a 6-4-3 double play on Roe’s first pitch in relief. Roe threw two additional scoreless innings and struck out three batters to secure the win.
In the end, Silva led the Tiger bats with two hits, one a double, and 2 RBIs. Allen hit a double for Floresville, Bryan hit a double to score the game-winning run, and Parker had a hit and RBI. Drew Clements, Micah Clements, Luna, and Pollok each tallied hits in the game as well.
