ABILENE -- After an impressive third-place showing at the regional powerlifting meet a few weeks ago, Stockdale High School sophomore Darion McMahan turned heads again, as he finished third during the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s state powerlifting meet at the Taylor County Expo Center March 26.

During the regional meet, McMahan lifted a total of 1,100 pounds. He turned in a bench press of 250 pounds, a squat of 440 pounds, and a dead lift of 410 pounds. Those good numbers were improved even further during the state meet, though, as McMahan powered up 245 on the bench, 415 in the dead lift, and 455 pounds on the squat rack, for a total of 1,115. The effort was good enough to grab third place once again, a great accomplishment for the sophomore who weighs in at around just 130 pounds.

“He had a great year and I am very proud of him and all he has done,” said Stockdale Powerlifting Coach Michael Enriquez. “He was in one of the toughest weight classes in Division 3 and never backed down from the competition.”

McMahan can now enjoy a little down time, but one thing remains clear. With two more years of competition ahead of him, competitors in the state better be working overtime in the weight room if they hope to keep McMahan from reaching his goal of being a state champion.
