Antonio “Tony” Ambriz Garza, 73, of Poteet, Texas, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011, in San Antonio. He was born June 13, 1937.

Tony always loved music and was taught at an early age by his Uncle Adolpho Garza “Tio Fito” how to play a guitar. As time passed, he taught himself the accordion. He started his own musical group, “Tony Garza y su Conjunto.” He later married and started his family and stopped playing, but his passion for music was always with him. He later professed to his wife, Barbara, that when his children grew up, they were going to be musicians. His dream started to be fulfilled when he began teaching his oldest son, David Lee, the accordion at the age of 11. Then later, his second son, Adam, showed interest in joining them, so he taught him to play the drums at the age of 8. After about seven years, his third son, Richard, also showed interest in joining the family in the music business, so he was taught the bass by his father. Antonio decided to name the band after his oldest son, David Lee. Later on, the band was named “Los Musicales.”

His dream of playing with his sons was fulfilled for about 30 years when he decided to step off the stage and manage the band. He continued to manage the band until his health no longer allowed him to manage and travel. He will always be remembered for his contribution to the Tejano music industry. Now his sons will carry his legacy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adan and Teresa Garza; and his brother, Cristoval A. Garza.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Garza; his daughter, Rebecca E. Gomez and husband Oscar; his sons, David Lee Garza and Adela Aguilar, Adam E. Garza and wife JoAnn, and Richard E. Garza and wife Cindy, all of Poteet; his sisters, Eva G. Montemayor of Poteet and Stella G. Thompson of San Antonio; his brother, Regulo A. Garza of San Antonio; his grandchildren, Anthony J. Garza, David Lee Garza Jr., Adrian J. Garza, Appollonia J. Gutierrez, Eric J. Garza, Crystal Gomez, Clarissa R. Garza, Kathryn Garza, Marco Cervantes, Richele Garza, Noah Martinez, and Felix Martinez; and his great-grandchildren, Adamari Garcia, Gavin Arguijo, Sophia Garza, David Lee Garza III, and Aiden Gutierrez.

A visitation was held on Tuesday, March 29, from 5-9 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Poteet.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the church.
