Larry Charles Carroll, 66, went peacefully home to the Lord on Friday, March 25, 2011, in his home in Victoria, Texas. He was born Feb. 21, 1945, to A.B. and Inez (Rodgers) Carroll in Gonzales.

After graduating from high school, Larry joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Hawaii at Schofield Barracks and the 25th Infantry Division. He was then deployed to Vietnam, where he flew more than 100 missions over enemy territory as an aerial door gunner on a U.S. helicopter during the war. He received multiple medals, including an Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, Expeditionary Medal, Division Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, National Defense Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Ribbon, Machine Gun Expert Badge, Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, Grenade Marksman Badge, and a Driver-wheel Mechanic Badge.

After returning from Vietnam, he married and had three children. He was a wonderful man and loving father and will be dearly missed.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, Varchia Green and husband Timothy of Victoria, Robert Carroll of Victoria, and John T. Carroll of Copperas Cove; his grandchildren who adored him, Ashley Green, Reagan Green, Ryan Green, and Sheldon Carroll, all of Victoria; and his sister, Maryann Hendrickson and husband James of Vidor.

A visitation was held on Thursday, March 31, from 1-2 p.m. with a funeral service at 2 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon.

Interment followed in the Round Lake Cemetery near Smiley.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
