Dorothy Devora Gonzales, a longtime resident of Poth, Texas, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2011, at 11:05 a.m. in the Metropolitan Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, at the age of 70 years and 29 days. Dorothy was born March 9, 1941, in Floresville to Trinidad Rodriguez and Joe Devora Sr.

Dorothy was a graduate of Poth High School and later went on to receive her associate degree in nursing. She worked as a nurse for 31 years before retiring in 2000.

Dorothy married Alex Gonzales on June 18, 1976, in the Blessed Sacrament Church in Poth. After retirement she became very active in her community and enjoyed all that she did. Dorothy was a Three Oaks Extension Education Association Treasurer, a member of the Catholic Daughters, a Red Hatter, a Poth Independent School District committee board member, a director and supervisor for the city and county community service, a director for the Wilson Area Housing Foundation, FCS and WEEA treasurer, and a local emergency committee member. She was a second-responder of disaster in Wilson County, a volunteer for Program Hope, USDA, Gleaning, food fairs, mobile pantry, Feeding America, and distributions, an RSVP committee member for Wilson County, a senior coalition representative for Wilson County, and an SAFB council member.

Most recognizably, Dorothy was known for her many years of dedication as director and president of the Food Pantry Poth Area. In 2009, Dorothy was awarded the RSVP Outstanding Award and the SAFB Volunteer of the Year Award.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Baby Boy Gonzales.

Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Alex Gonzales; her brother, Joe Devora and wife Rosie; her sister, Hilda Tejada and husband James “Butch”; her nieces and nephews, Lisa Cantu and husband John, Sandra Velazquez and husband Rick, Johnny Devora, and Joshua Tejada; and her great-nieces and -nephews, Mason Sanders, Colby, Kendall, and Caiden Cantu, Alyssa Tejada, and Addison Velazquez.

A visitation was held on Tuesday, April 5, at 7 p.m. and a rosary was recited at 8:15 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the church.

Interment will follow in the

Blessed Sacrament Cemetery in Poth.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mason Sanders, Johnny Devora, Colby Cantu, John Cantu, Rick Velazquez, and James “Butch” Tejada. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Joshua Tejada.
