Keith LaRue Thurston
Keith LaRue Thurston, 70, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011. He was born on May 22, 1940, in Norton, Va., to LaRue Abraham and Avonell Knipp Thurston.
Keith enlisted in the U.S. Air Force upon completion of high school. While enlisted, he graduated from the University of Nebraska. After 13 years of service, he completed Officer Candidate School at Medina Air Force Base and was commissioned as an officer. Keith then spent another 10 years in the U.S. Air Force serving in the Strategic Air Command as a missile combat crew commander before retiring as a captain in 1982 after 23 years of service.
Keith moved to his “ranch” in Stockdale. During retirement, he enjoyed his two favorite pastimes, fishing and gardening. Many fishing trips were enjoyed at the coast with family and friends. The week-long trips to Sunday Beach in Port O’Connor were enjoyed the most. Keith also greatly enjoyed gardening. He influenced many of his friends with his knowledge of organic-raised bed gardening. For many years, Keith sold vegetables at the Farmers Market in San Antonio. In teaching people to fish and garden, Keith was able to feed those he touched for a lifetime.
Keith was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David Thurston; and his former wife, Elizabeth Lynn Miller.
Keith is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Margit Thurston of Seguin; his son, Keith L. Thurston Jr. and wife Margaret of La Vernia; and his grandchildren, Shay and Macy.
Keith is also survived by his sister, Vickie Woodbury and husband Roger of Fort Madison, Iowa.
A memorial service was held Friday, April 1, at 11 a.m. in the Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin with a reception following in the church activity center.
Interment will take place at a future date in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
