Even the annual Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington DC would have to be cancelled. Or, as President Obama said, a family planning a vacation to Yellowstone National Park would not be able to go there if there is a government shutdown.
This is how serious a government shutdown really is to those in Washington.
What is really important, though, are not parades and vacations, but our military.
Many of our military soldiers are living paycheck to paycheck, and some of them have families at home depending on that paycheck, however small. Under presidents Reagan and Clinton, the military got their paychecks on time even with government shutdowns, but this apparently will not be the case with President Obama.
It comes down to having to choose between our military and continued funding of Planned Parenthood and National Public Radio. The Republican budget slashes these items, as they are determined to pass a budget that they feel will honor the promises they made when they were elected.
The president is saying that he does not intend to sign a temporary bill being proposed by the Republicans. He accuses them of “playing politics,” but if you look at the facts, it was the Democrats who FAILED to pass a budget last fall when they controlled both houses and the White House.
Now that the Republicans have come up with a budget, the Dems are stonewalling and threatening to leave our military soldiers and their families without recourse.
This is not just politics as usual; it is a new low in American politics.
Let's fund the military and let Planned Parenthood and National Public Radio fend for themselves. |
