Tell It Like It Is

Harlingen, Texas, April 9, 2011: We all know the old gag line. “What is the difference between Congress and the Boy Scouts?” The answer -- “Boy Scouts have adult leadership.” If ever there was a true example of that joke, it can be found filling the leadership ranks in both bodies of Congress.

After playing the “Chicken” game with each other up to the final ticking of the clock triggering a government shutdown, the legislators of this nation finally reached an agreement on how to keep the engine of government running. This did not happen in a logical and thoughtful business-like manner, but came to pass behind the veil of demonizing, name-calling, distortion, plus a trainload of out-and-out lies belched out to the American public. It was a disgusting display of juvenile jabber that is far removed from the type of conduct we expect from our national leadership.

America has already told Congress what it expects of our government. This happened last November in a landmark election. Still, they don’t seem to grasp their orders from the people.... Stop Spending!

This message was sent to everyone in national government. The citizenry knows both parties are to blame for the fiscal mess we all must now suffer our way through to some form of resolution. The Democrats are responsible for the largest deficit in our more than two centuries of existence. The Republicans are responsible for the second highest deficit in our history. So, nobody can claim clean hands while attempting to deal with our serious debt.

In March 2011 alone we increased our national debt by $65 billion more than we had the previous year. This means the small change $38 billion in budget cuts everyone in Washington is bragging about today is still $27 billion short of the debt we incurred for just this past month.

Most of us manage to live within our means. When my wife and I started our lives together I was a $110 a month Marine Corporal. She was a $125 a month bank teller. For some time we both held down extra jobs just to make our finances end up in the black each month. I worked at night selling television sets. She was an usher in a movie theater. We had an old used car, went without meat for dinner several nights a week, bought day old bread at the bakery and had no entertainment that had a price tag attached to admission. We saved a few dollars and we never ran a deficit budget. That was our life and it was how millions of level-headed families conducted their business then...and today.

These same Americans who cut expenses and try to advance themselves through wise spending and thrifty utilization of their personal wealth, are also the people who bankroll a place called the United States of America. They are the same people who send individuals to Congress with the expectation that this is still a representative government and those elected officials will be diligent in their pursuit of keeping the cost of governance within the means of the national purse.

Instead of displaying the diligence expected by those voters who placed them in positions of power, our members of Congress have treated us to massive over-spending, financial mismanagement and hateful language directed at their opponents to explain their malfeasance. Now they congratulate themselves on slashing pennies from a budget deficit that will make paupers of our grandchildren and try to imply they are responsible leaders. As my mother used to say... Balderdash!
