Lothell Moore Lawhon
Surrounded by her children, Lothell Moore Lawhon passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 2, 2011, in the Regency Manor Nursing and Rehab in Floresville, Texas. She was born in Stockdale to James Henry and Willie Jay Moore on Dec. 12, 1918, and attained the age of 92 years, 3 months, and 20 days.
Lothell was raised in the Dewees and Poth communities and graduated valedictorian of her Poth High School class. Lothell married Zane Briggs Lawhon on Jan. 14, 1940. A well-known business and civic leader in Floresville, Zane preceded her in death in 1962.
Lothell was truly a product of the “Greatest Generation” and her values reflected those of that generation. Her strong, determined spirit served her well during those years after losing her beloved Zane too early in their marriage. She was known as an upright independent individual.
Lothell’s home was always open for family and friends to gather for a bountiful table and friendship. She was truly the quintessential hostess. Even after her children left home, she always had two freezers full of food and ready to share at her gatherings, with friends at church, and within the community. Gardening was her delight and all admired her beautiful yard year-round. She enjoyed sewing and playing bridge with her many friends.
Zane and Lothell were the Texaco Consignees for Wilson County until his death. After that, she was employed at the First National Bank of Floresville, the Wilson County Clerk’s office, and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services office, from which she retired in 1988.
Her civic endeavors included membership in the Floresville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as the Worthy Matron. She was a lifelong member of the Tuesday Musical Club, the Floresville Peanut Association, and was an active supporter of all school events involving Jimmy and Barbara.
She was a faithful member of the Floresville United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women organization, and the Loving Care Committee.
Lothell is survived by her son, James Clinton Lawhon and wife Gloria of Floresville; her daughter, Barbara Jean Lawhon Davenport and husband Jim of Houston; her grandchildren, James Clinton Lawhon II and wife Patricia, Matthew Brian Lawhon and wife Lauren, and Natalie Claire Lawhon Davenport; her great-grandchildren, Zane Clinton, Caitlin Amanda, Ashleigh Kimball, Peyton James, Ellie Briggs, and Luke Alexander Lawhon; and her brother-in-law, Doyle Lawhon.
A funeral service was held Saturday, April 9, in the Floresville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael C. Mumme officiating.
Serving as pallbearers were Jim Davenport, James Clinton Lawhon II, Matthew Brian Lawhon, Zane Clinton Lawhon, Lowell Moore, Lester Lyssy, Garrett Lyssy, and Andrew Lyssy.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Regency Manor nursing home, Vista Care Hospice staff, the Rev. Michael Mumme, and dear friend Wanda Turner, who faithfully attended to her and visited her during her residency in Regency Manor.
