SEGUIN -- After an outstanding showing during the District 29-2A tennis tournament at Starcke Park April 6-7, members of the Stockdale High School varsity boys and girls teams can now call themselves “District Champs.”

Gabby Salazar and Kristen Salazar led the varsity girls team with their first-place finish in girls doubles, followed by teammates Lauryn Coston and Jessica Puente, who finished second in girls doubles play. As the district’s top two teams in doubles competition, both teams will advance to the regional tournament later this month.

In varsity boys competition, the Brahmas were led by the doubles play of Landon Coston and Dylan Dunn. The duo finished first to win the boys doubles district championship. Jordan Jackson showed he had the right stuff in boys singles play, and he, too, won an individual district championship. Coston, Dunn, and Jackson will also advance to the regional tournament.

In other action, Anthony Bennett and Jacob Cardenas finished fourth in boys doubles, Tristan Marquez advanced to the second round in singles play, and the mixed doubles team of Ronald Lankford and Roxanne Bischak played 2-1/2 hours in the first round to lose a hard-fought three-set match.

In total, Stockdale will send seven athletes to the regional tournament in San Marcos April 20-21.

During junior varsity play, Sarah Holguin, Katarina Wehmeyer, and Shelly Oltmanns competed in the first round of play; and Perry Bone and Tyler Middleton finished fourth in boys doubles action.
