POTH -- The Poth Pirette softball team continued its dominance of District 29-2A opponents last week, as the Brooks Academy Bengals and the Stockdale Lady Brahmas fell to Poth to begin the second round of district play.
The Bengals traveled to Poth to start the second round of district play, but things began in an unfamiliar fashion for the Pirettes.
Following a one-out single in the first inning by Brooks left fielder Vanessa Razo, Adrianne Gonzales scorched a double to center field. The Bengals looked to be a threat early in the first inning, but things began to turn around when Poth center fielder Lindsay Lyssy played a ball perfectly and made the long throw to Poth catcher Charity Fuller -- who stood ready behind home plate. The play froze Razo at third, and eventually kept Brooks Academy from scoring.
From there, senior Pirette pitcher Monica Cavazos zeroed in and methodically dispatched the next eight batters she faced. It took Poth just three innings to put Brooks away by the score of 16-0.
Poth’s offense continued to be provided by the usual players, but the Pirettes also got help from some additional players this game. Junior second baseman Heather Rocha led the way by going 3 for 4 at the plate with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Fuller, along with seniors Kaylee Lyssy and Destiny Rodriguez, also contributed two hits each during the offensive onslaught. Senior Caitlyn Gorzell, not typically known for her offensive play, had a great game as she went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs, two stolen bases, and 2 runs scored.
A victory over the county rival Stockdale Lady Brahmas was not quite as easy as the 12-0 final score made it seem. Lady Brahma pitcher Kristy Vela seemed to have better luck than most with holding the Pirette offensive juggernaut in check. However, Poth senior star shortstop Kayla Boening and the Pirette bats would not be denied.
Boening led the Pirettes by going 3 for 3 with a single, a double, and a triple to back up 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Sophomore third baseman Ryann Boening chipped in with a hard shot to right center, driving in 1 run with a triple. Kaylee Lyssy also added a triple, and Fuller drove in 2 more runs to seal the Pirettes’ victory.
Unfortunately for the home team Lady Brahmas, Cavazos seems to be getting stronger as the season progresses. In the five innings it took for the Pirettes to defeat the Lady Brahmas, Cavazos struck out 12 batters and allowed only Stockdale right fielder Nikki Fackleman to reach base on a soft base hit over third base. The few occasions the Lady Brahmas put the ball in play, a well-coached Pirette defense smothered the ball -- including a game-ending fly ball to right fielder Kelsey Garcia.
Poth Head Coach Carilee Robbins and the Pirettes continue their trek to the playoffs this week, as they welcome the Luling Eagles and the Marion Bulldogs to Poth on Tuesday and Friday, respectively.
