After signing her letter of intent to attend the University of Texas-Pan American April 13, East Central senior Diara Reynolds can begin focusing on life after high school, as a member of the Broncs volleyball team.

When it came time to make the decision, Reynolds said it was easy to choose Pan American.

“I really enjoyed my visit,” she said. “It was everything, really -- the campus, the team, my interaction with the other girls and the coaches.”

Reynolds has been a multi-sport athlete at East Central, but turned a number of heads while helping the Lady Hornet volleyball team enjoy the success it has over the past few years. Reynolds is a powerful hitter who intimidated opponents, and hopes to continue that success down in Edinburg.

Reynolds plans to major in kinesiology, but is also interested in the world of fashion and design. At East Central, her favorite subject all year has been physics, and she enjoyed learning “something new every day.” Reynolds is described as being a good student, and her teachers and coaches are confident she will find success in and out of the classroom at Pan American.

As for leaving East Central, Reynolds said she will miss her friends and teammates, and will miss her time as a Hornet. She is excited about the opportunity to play volleyball for Pan American, though, and to taking in the college experience.

If anyone could be more excited, it just may be Reynolds’ mom, Stephanie Rice. Rice was all smiles as her daughter signed on to play for the Broncs, but is even more excited about the academic side of things.

“It wasn’t just about athletics with them,” Rice said. “They are on top of their players about grades, and there is no reason not to succeed. I like that a lot.”

As Reynolds looks forward to a bright future, her teammates and coach can’t help but to look back and be a little sad. East Central Head Volleyball Coach Robyn Wunderlich said she is going to miss Reynolds, and explained that she was a big part of the team’s success.

“Diara has become such a dominating player,” Wunderlich said. “She is aggressive, talented, and a stand-out to our opponents. Diara has done a great job in the classroom and on the court. Her teammates and coaches will miss her, but we are so proud of her and wish her the best.”

The University of Texas-Pan American competes in the Great West Conference and regularly faces schools from Texas, Utah, Illinois, South Dakota, and North Dakota.
