Juan Jose “Jay” Martinez, a longtime resident of Floresville, Texas, entered into eternal rest in his residence on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at 7:05 a.m. at the age of 81 years, 1 month, and 11 days. Jay was born March 10, 1930, in Floresville to Atanacio and Jesusa Andrada Martinez.

On Nov. 14, 1957, Jay married his beautiful wife, Janie Castro, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Jay worked as a warehouse supervisor at the Floresville Electric Light & Power System. He loved to go fishing and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. He was sure to be watching them on television during football season. In his younger days, he enjoyed skiing.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Alfredo, Elpidio, and Rogelio Martinez; his sister, Lilly Zuniga; and his grandson, Juan Jose “JJ” Martinez.

Jay is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Janie Castro Martinez; his sons, Daniel Martinez and David Martinez and wife Pat; his grandchildren,

Monica Veliz, Janella Mendez, and Austin Jacob Jimenez; his great-grandchildren, Krislyn Veliz, Ariah Leal, and Nathaniel Leal; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation was held on Sunday, April 24, at 5 p.m. and a rosary was recited at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home in Floresville.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday at noon in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville with the Rev. Phil Henning officiating.

Interment followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Floresville.

Serving as pallbearers were Brandon Gonzales, Roy Esparza, Joseph Treviño, Eddie Trinidad, Ruben Martinez, and Paul Castro.
