Brownlow wins at science fair
Emily Snooks (third from right) of ExxonMobil joins award winners (from left) Trisha Mulamreddy of San Antonio, Rhea Kamat of San Antonio, Cameron Brasher of Argyle, Sean Walter of New Braunfels, Alicia DSouza of Plano, and Dustin Brownlow of Floresville at the 2011 ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair. These youth were the top winners in the junior division in the environmental sciences/analysis category.
A Floresville student was honored for his scientific ingenuity at the Exxon Mobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair, held March 31-April 3 in San Antonio. The annual four-day competition hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio brings together top science fair winners from across the state to vie for honors, college scholarships, and the opportunity to compete at the international level.
Dustin Brownlow, an eighth-grader at San Antonio Academy, received honorable mention for his project in the junior division environmental sciences/analysis category.
Students competed in two divisions -- junior, grades six through eight, and senior, grades nine through 12 -- in one of 17 categories. Selected from more than 1,000 entries, awards were given to first- through fourth-place winners, as well as honorable mention, in each category, as well as Grand Prize and Best in Fair projects in each division.
For the 11th consecutive year, Exxon Mobil Corp. sponsored the state-level competition and provided a grant of $75,000 that also funded a diversity recruitment initiative to aid students with project and travel expenses who would otherwise be unable to participate. The University of Texas at San Antonio has hosted the fair since 2004 and the Texas Science Careers Consortium has managed the fair since its inception 25 years ago.
