CORPUS CHRISTI -- The La Vernia varsity tennis team sent seven members to the regional tennis tournament here April 20-21.

Each of the La Vernia athletes had a great showing, and Shelby Brantley led the way to earn a spot in the state tournament next month. In doing so, Brantley became the first La Vernia girls singles player to advance to state since the 1970s. Hunter Johnson also broke a school record by being the first boys singles player to advance to the regional quarterfinal round.

In other action, girls singles player Sarah Ellis and boys doubles team Adam Poore and Levi Andrews advanced to the quarterfinal round as well. A.J. Ramon and Nick Guitron made it to the round of 16.

Brantley began her tournament play by knocking off a player from Taylor by the score of 6-2, 6-1. She then defeated Chavez of La Feria 6-1, 6-1, and McClain of Rockport-Fulton 6-1, 6-1, to earn a spot in the championship against Paige Bahnsen, the region’s No. 1 seed and defending champion. Brantley made quick work of Bahnsen, though, winning 6-1, 6-1.

Brantley will now shift her focus to the state tournament, which will be held at the Lakeway World of Tennis center in Austin May 9-10.
