I find it ironic that the beatification of Pope John Paul II was sandwiched in between such historic events as a royal wedding on Friday and now, Sunday night, the announcement that Osama Bin Laden is dead.
To millions of Catholics and others, around the world, Pope John Paul II was a man of historic proportions -- a saintly man, to be sure.
As the world media were focused all day Friday and all the weekend on the wedding of Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton, many Catholics and others were anxiously waiting to hear some coverage of the beatification of their beloved Pope John Paul II. Just as reports about the Pope's beatification were beginning to come on the news Sunday night, the news broke that President Barack Obama was about to address the nation from the White House.
By approximately 10:38 p.m. CST, the news was out that, indeed, Osama Bin Laden had been killed. It has been almost 10 long years since 9-11, and the United States declared war on "terror" and began hunting him down.
Perhaps Blessed John Paul II would be only too willing to sacrifice his moment in heavenly glory for the announcement that the man who demanded the killing of innocents in the name of "god" had finally been silenced.
We hope to hear more soon about Bin Laden's demise, but we know that Blessed John Paul II will have the rest of eternity to share the glory of God. |
