With all of their district games complete, several of the area’s high school baseball teams can now begin focusing on the playoffs. For the teams from East Central, Floresville, La Vernia, and Poth, a season filled with hard work and sweat is about to pay dividends.

Playing out of District 28-5A, the East Central Hornets have qualified for the postseason after finishing third with a district record of 6-4. While Corpus Christi Carroll and Corpus Christi King grabbed the top two spots, the Hornets were a solid lock in third, finishing two games ahead of Southwest.

In Class 4A, the Floresville Tigers have laid claim to the fourth and final playoff position from District 30-4A. The two teams from Victoria locked up the top two spots, while Gregory-Portland finished third. The Tigers finished well above Port Lavaca Calhoun and Beeville Jones, though, and are set to meet Burbank in the first round.

The La Vernia Bears just made the playoffs, picking up victories when they counted most. Trailing behind Cuero and Yoakum, the Bears were tied with the Pleasanton Eagles for the third and final playoff spot in District 28-3A. The two squared off in the final game of the regular season last Friday, and the Bears earned a thrilling 4-1 win.

In Class 2A competition, only one of the three area teams made the cut this year. Poth finished third in District 30-2A behind the teams from Karnes City and Dilley to earn their spot in the postseason. Both Stockdale and Nixon-Smiley missed out on the bonus games, having finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in District 29-2A. Marion, Luling, and Cole grabbed the playoff slots in that district.

District results are still being certified, but the bi-district round of competition should begin this week. For updated playoff information and results, visit www.wilsoncountynews.com.
