CONVERSE -- After a strong showing in the district meet, Poth High School sent a number of track and field athletes to the Region IV Class 2A meet at Judson High School May 2-3. The Pirates and Pirettes impressed once again, and at least two are now preparing for a trip to Austin and the state meet this weekend.

In girls field competition, Avery Acker finished third in the discus with a distance of 127 feet, 5 inches. Jessica Dziuk finished seventh in the event with a throw of 109 feet, 11 inches. Alison Reed was fourth in the pole vault at 9 feet; Tara Dunn was fourth in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches; Kelsee Felux was seventh in high jump at 5 feet; and Dziuk was fifth in shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 7-1/4 inches.

Making the headlines for the Pirettes, though, was Tara Broyles, as she leapt 17 feet, 3-1/2 inches in the long jump for a new school record and a second-place finish in the region. With that jump, Broyles has qualified for the state meet.

On the track, Morgan Koenig finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.26; the 4x400-meter relay team of Felux, Tori Morris, Kelli Kolodziej, and Broyles finished fifth with a time of 4:13.98; and the 4x200-meter relay team of Jessica Coronado, Acker, Kolodziej, and Broyles finished eighth with a time of 1:51.05. The Pirettes finished sixth in the overall team standings.

In boys events, Tyler Kallies finished sixth in the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 5 inches; and Tommy Waclawczyk was seventh in the high jump with a height of 6 feet. Billy Korzekwa qualified for the state meet in the discus with his throw of 175 feet, 8 inches; and teammate Dillon Zaiontz finished eighth in the same event with a throw of 141 feet. The Pirate 4x200-meter relay team of Talon Musgrove, Jesse Dugi, Blake Lyssy, and Zach Lyssy finished eighth with a time of 1:34.48.

In addition to Korzekwa and Broyles qualifying for the state meet, Acker still has a chance to qualify as the ninth competitor, if her discus-throw distance turns out to be the best third-place finish from among all four regions.

The state track and field meet is scheduled to be held this Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
