Pair keeps winning at raceway
PLEASANTON -- It may have been sweetness and light among the fans at I-37 Raceway at Newsome Motor Park May 7, as the mothers in the stands were honored with flowers on the eve of Mother’s Day, but there was chaos on the track, as two drivers got upside down in the IMCA Modified feature.
The Modified race itself was a study in yellow, as caution flags flew seemingly every lap. For Greg Dinsmore, it meant more opportunities to demonstrate his mastery of the field, as he blew them away at every green-flag restart on the way to his sixth race win. Dinsmore was chased to the line by Darin Leonard, Bill Pittaway, and Dennis Taylor.
Johnny Torres hasn’t lost this year, either. He has worked hard to keep that record in the IMCA Southern Sport Mods, having been pressured by Michael Hernandez, Larry Jernigan, Mickey Helms, Kris Rye, Greg Rohmer, Moe VanKirk, Tom Grothues, and Randy Yount. In total, there were 17 cars that took the green flag in the Sports Mod feature. At the end, it was Torres out front with Hernandez second, Rye third, and the ageless Larry Jernigan finishing fourth.
With the help of Tator Mason’s sponsorship, the Tator Plumbing Limited Late Models class has been making a comeback. Eleven cars took the green Saturday night, and former pavement racer Matt Hodge of Kyle was again a contender in the Limited Lates, as he led the first four or five laps before eventual winner Trey Votion got by. Richard Bartosh had a hard run to finish second, with Hodge battling him all the way.
The Street Stocks class is also growing, and a baker’s dozen made the start last weekend. Stephan Danielson won his heat race, and then outfought the usual front runners to take his first win ahead of A.J. Dancer, Mike Lyon, Wade Jones, and Dennis Hilla. Some of the faster Street Stock drivers had problems, including A.J. Wernette and Tommy Casey.
The Pure Stock race is usually one of the best of the night, and 19 cars took the green flag for the feature last Saturday. The lead pack at nearly every race this year has included Frank Okruhlik, Brandy Ramzinski, Justin Henley, Jarrett Payton, and Janel Hilla, who won her fifth heat race in a row this week. But during the feature, Okruhlik fought past Hilla, Ramzinski, Payton, and Henley to get the win. Henley was second, Payton was third, and Hilla finished fourth. This battle just gets better every week.
The Front Runners had 10 cars on the track as the green flag fell on another race to yield a first-time winner. Landon Sowder was able to stay in the mix, and then led the only lap that matters -- the last. Sowder won the race, Jimmy Carroll was second, and Cody Earnhardt finished third. Hailee Marcx was also fast, but fell out early with a broken race car.
I-37 Raceway will see action again this Saturday, May 14. The track is not just an inexpensive night of entertainment; it is also just a short drive away. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m., and the racing starts at 7 p.m.
