SAN ANTONIO -- After winning yet another team title, the East Central Hornet track and field team is quickly being viewed as the team to beat this weekend in the state track and field meet. The Hornets blew through their district, and then took the regional crown by more than 20 points over second-place Sharyland and nearly 30 points over third-place Judson.

The Hornets’ success was due to a trio of first-place finishes, a pair of silver medals for second, one fourth-place finish, and one fifth-place showing. The Hornets had other strong showings, despite missing the finals, but still earned enough team points to take home the title.

In the 4x400-meter relay, Aaron Spann, Chris Armstrong, Matt Coleman, and Nick Coleman topped the competition with their time of 3:18.56. The 4x200-meter relay team of Austin Jupe, Matt Coleman, Nick Coleman, and Chris Armstrong also took gold with a time of 1:28.13. In the pole vault, Kyle Padalecki outperformed his closest competition by a full foot at 15 feet to win the Hornets’ third gold medal of the meet.

Aaron Spann earned a silver medal for his second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.32. In the 110-meter hurdles, Chris Armstrong finished second with a time of 14:17, while Austin Jupe finished fourth with a time of 14.85. Jupe went on to earn the Hornets more points with his fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and a time of 40.06.

Also competing for the Hornet team were David Tersec (discus), Austin Allen (high jump), Troy Pieniazek (pole vault), Ricky Guzman (triple jump), Javier Salas (3,200-meter run), Adam Lee (3,200- and 1,600-meter runs), Kendall Spann (800-meter run), Kendrick Davis (200-meter dash), and Brandon Lowak (100-meter dash). Austin Jupe also competed in the high jump; and David Martinez, Dustin Toscano, Aacen Anderson, and Alex Autry ran in the 4x100-meter relay.

During the girls competition, while none of the Lady Hornet track and field athletes will advance to the state meet, the group still made a good showing in numerous events.

Lexi Ricks competed in the pole vault, Savannah Silva participated in the 3,200-meter run, Raven Smith showed her stuff in the 200-meter dash, and Aurieanna Brown competed in the 100-meter dash.

Katelyn Gonzales, Malari Williams, Maria Vaca, and Na’Kia Reid teamed up for the 4x400-meter relay; Jasmine Baucham, Malari Williams, Angelica Kuykendall, and Ariel Allen competed in the 4x200-meter relay; Katelyn Gonzales, Angelica Kuykendall, Daniela Leija, and Khadijah Miller ran the 4x100-meter relay; Latisha Moffett represented East Central in the 300-meter hurdles; and Cole Jackson and Latisha Moffett both competed in the 100-meter hurdles event.

The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
