CORPUS CHRISTI -- After a strong showing at the Region IV Class 3A track and field meet last week, the La Vernia Lady Bears team is the regional runner-up for the second time in three years. La Vernia had a great showing in Corpus Christi, and will send several athletes to the state meet in Austin this week. The Bear track and field team was also in action, and it, too, will send a group of athletes to the state meet.

In girls competition, the Lady Bear 4x100-meter relay team of Amy Gastauer, Haley Bruner, Brittani Dear, and Natalie Baker beat Corpus Christi West Oso by .41 seconds to win gold and qualify for the state meet.

During individual events, Baker qualified for the state meet by finishing second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.39 seconds. She also won a pair of bronze medals in the 100-meter hurdles and in the long jump. She scored a personal best of 17 feet, 5 inches in the long jump, and turned in a time of 14.92 in the 100-meter hurdles -- a mark good enough to earn another spot in the state meet as the “ninth-place qualifier.”

The Lady Bear 4x200-meter relay team of Gastauer, Bruner, Dear, and Mollie Wildenstein also ran well, but just missed the podium after finishing fourth to Fredericksburg with a time of 1:47.01. Dear finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.66, and Bailee Vrana placed sixth in the 3,200-meter run with a personal best time of 12:18.

“I’m incredibly proud of the effort that our kids gave,” said Head Coach Richard Hinojosa. “We were leading the meet going into the last event and Fredericksburg had just a bit more than we did. They returned every athlete from last year’s regional title team.”

On the boys side of things, the Bears showcased their speed in the 4x200-meter relay. Richard Snyder, Alec Dews, Ryan Montgomery, and Aaron Grubb finished third in the preliminaries with a time of 1:32.02 to qualify for the finals. Zachary Gonzalez then replaced Montgomery in the finals, and the team was able to shave a full second off its time to finish second at 1:31.01, and earn a trip to the state meet.

In individual competition, Grubb qualified for the finals in the 200-meter dash, and then finished fifth overall with a time of 22.54.

“Obviously it was a team effort to maximize our opportunity to get to state,” said Coach Danny Gonzalez. “All five of these men played an important role in getting us there. All of our regional qualifiers did a tremendous job for our team.”

The state track and field meet will be held this Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
