High winds, heavy rain, and related storm conditions are causing power outages in the Greater San Antonio area. As of 11:55 a.m. May 12, approximately 7,000 outages were reported. CPS Energy crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible. Storm-related outages may continue as a line of severe storms moves across South Texas. CPS Energy advises customers to locate a flashlight and battery-powered radio to prepare for the potential of an outage. Residential customers who lose power are advised to:

•Stay away from downed power lines. Treat all wires as if they are “live” (energized). Report damaged power lines immediately by calling 911 and CPS Energy at 353-4327.

•Turn off electronic devices such as televisions, stereos, computers, and printers to avoid sudden surges and spikes that could damage electrical devices when power is restored.

•Turn off the air-conditioning system -- leaving it on could create an overload on the system when power is restored and create an additional outage.

•Keep one light turned on to know when power has been restored.

•Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep food cold longer.

•Use caution with candles and generators, carefully placing them so as not to create a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning hazard.

•Use caution when driving, as traffic signals may be disrupted.

To report an outage, call 353-HELP (4357). To view a near real-time map of affected areas, visit cpsenergy.com and click on Power Outages. CPS Energy is the nation’s largest municipally owned natural gas and electric utility, providing service to approximately 717,000 electric customers and 325,000 natural gas customers in and around the city of San Antonio. The utility ranks among the nation’s lowest-cost energy providers while ranking No. 1 in wind-energy capacity among municipally owned utilities. For more information, visit www.cpsenergy.com.
