Winning streaks snapped at I-37 Raceway
Megan Kersh (left) and Lacie Weilbacher of Poth Junior High School show off the second- and third-place medals they won in the eighth-grade girls division of the Karnes County Junior Golf Association Junior High golf tournament. The tournament was held May 9 at the Karnes County Country Club. With their strong finishes, the girls qualified to compete in the junior high district tournament set for May 17.
PLEASANTON -- Greg Dinsmore finally lost an IMCA race at I-37 Raceway at Newsome Motor Park last Saturday, May 14, as the track prepared to skip the next two weekends. That meant it was the last chance for someone to stop Dinsmore and Johnny Torres from extending their winning streaks.
Dinsmore got off to a bad start, as he made his usual charge through the field in the IMCA Modified feature. He took the lead at about the halfway point, but was then involved in an accident that left him with a very damaged race car. The rest of the drivers fought for the lead. Jamie Campbell eventually got the win, with “Backhoe Joe” Spillman finishing second in his first race at I-37 this year.
Torres was the target of a number of teams looking to stop his win streak in the IMCA Southern Sports Mod feature, with the Rye brothers and Moe VanKirk leading the charge. The Sport Mods ran from flag to flag with no cautions, and VanKirk led all the way. Torres was beset and belabored by Kris and “Flyin’ Brian” Rye, and by Michael Hernandez, who has been on Torres’ back the whole first part of the season. At the end, Torres finished third behind Kris Rye.
Trey Votion has dominated the Limited Late Model class at I-37 Raceway this year, but he hasn’t had any easy wins. Craig Crawley and Matt Hodge have been keeping him honest, and they did it again Saturday night. Last year’s Limited Late champ, Richard Bartosh, has also been in the mix this year and finished third this week.
Dinsmore drove the newly built No. 93 car in the Street Stock race. He and fellow heat race winner A.J. Dancer put on a clinic for how to race fast, hard, and clean. Dinsmore drove to the win, as he and Dancer finished ahead of last week’s winner, Stephan Danielson.
The Pure Stocks were once again one of the highlights of the night, as a 15-car field took to the track. That was kind of a light field for the “Pures,” and Frank Okruhlik ended up with another win after a good battle with the brother-sister team of Jarrett Payton and Brandy Ramzinski. The siblings finished second and third.
Thirteen Front Runners took the green flag in the feature, with Cody Earnhardt making a strong run to the win. Cameron Smith and Trevor Bettis finished second and third. Hailee Marcx also had a good drive after spinning out and going to the rear twice. She gained positions on every restart, and ended up finishing fourth ahead of Jordan Mayberry.
I-37 Raceway at Newsome Motor Park will not race again until June 4, shutting down this week, and then again on May 28 in observance of the Memorial Day weekend. The gates at I-37 Raceway open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. There is almost always a breeze blowing from behind the grandstand, even on warm nights, and it’s a great way to spend a Saturday night.
