La Vernia Lady Bears fall to Bandera

SAN ANTONIO -- After falling two games to one in a best-of-three series with Bandera, the 2011 softball season has ended for the La Vernia Lady Bears.

After blowing by Wimberley in the area championship round of play, the Lady Bears squared off with the Lady Bulldogs of Bandera in the regional quarterfinals. La Vernia made the first game look easy with a 4-0 win, but then fell in games two and three by the scores of 1-0 and 3-0.

During game one, the Lady Bears led 1-0 after the second inning and had a 2-0 lead after three. La Vernia tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and owned a 4-0 lead from there out. Lauren Ainsley was credited with the win, and the Lady Bears were a win away from the semifinals.

In game two, the Lady Bulldogs struck first by scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. From there, it was a defensive and pitching battle, as neither team made any progress. Both teams registered three hits in the game, and the Lady Bears were charged with four errors, while the Lady Bulldogs committed two. In the end, the lone run by Bandera was enough for the win, and evened the series at a game apiece.

In the final game of the series, La Vernia got its bats going again, but good defense and pitching from Bandera held the Lady Bears at bay. La Vernia tallied a total of five hits in the game, but was unable to move any runners across home plate. Although the Lady Bulldogs registered just four hits, they were able to score 1 run in the top of the third inning and 2 more in the top of the sixth. The final score was 3-0, and it was more than enough to send Bandera to the semifinals, and to send La Vernia home.

The Lady Bears end the year with an impressive 30-11 overall record. They were the District 28-3A champs, and won an area championship.
