Beaverettes fall in single-game playoff
SEGUIN -- After playing a phenomenal season as one of the state’s top-ranked softball teams in Class 1A, the year has come to an end for the Falls City Beaverettes. Falls City fell to LBJ High School on May 11 by the score of 4-3.
The Beaverettes entered the 2011 postseason with a first-round bye. The team then took on D’Hanis in a best-of-three series for the area championship, and walked away with the title.
When it came to the regional quarterfinals, though, it was ultimately decided to play a single-game series. The Beaverettes were hoping for a quick win and trip to the semifinals, but it wasn’t meant to be.
After a long and hard-fought game, it came down to the bottom of the seventh inning. Falls City was clinging to a 1-run lead at 3-2, but LBJ wasn’t finished playing.
The Lady Eagles made a strong showing in the final inning of the game, and managed to load the bases. Falls City hadn’t stopped playing either, though, and the Beaverettes had two of the three outs they needed.
With everyone in the stands and dugouts holding their breath, the game was decided in the blink of an eye. A good pitch was made, but a better swing was taken, and a two-out hit scored 2 runs for the Lady Eagles, giving them the 4-3 victory.
Beaverette Head Coach Travis Ehrlich was disappointed in the outcome, but not in his girls.
“I’m really proud of them,” he said. “We took some big steps this year. This is a tough loss.”
