Bears fall to Boerne in area matchup

SAN ANTONIO -- While the La Vernia Bear baseball team pulled out some big wins to make the playoffs this year, the team’s luck ran out while facing Boerne in the area championship round of competition. The Greyhounds won the first game by the score of 10-0, and then topped the Bears in game two by the score of 5-1.

In the first of two games, Boerne came out swinging in the top of the first inning and put a pair of runs on the board. The Greyhounds then added another run in the second, holding a 3-0 lead over the Bears.

La Vernia settled into the game, and Brandon Velez threw well off the hill for the Bears, but the sticks stayed silent. La Vernia managed just two hits in the game, and was unable to score any runs throughout the contest.

The Greyhounds added 3 runs in the sixth inning and put up another 4 in the seventh, leading to the 10-0 win and the one-game advantage in the series.

During game two, Ryan McBride and the Bear defense held Boerne off during the first inning, but the Greyhounds managed to score 2 runs in the second inning and another in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Bears got onto the board with a run of their own in the top of the sixth. With the lead cut to 3-1, the Bears’ spirits were lifted.

Unfortunately, the Greyhounds came right back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs to take a 5-1 advantage. The Bears were unable to score during their final at-bat, and fell to Boerne for the second time.

While the Bears’ season is over, La Vernia made a great comeback in 2011, winning its last four games of the regular season to make the playoffs. The Bears then earned a bi-district championship with a pair of wins over the Lytle Pirates.
