Nathan Morris finishes sixth at state golf tourney
AUSTIN -- After finishing second in the regional golf meet last month in San Marcos, Nixon-Smiley junior Nathan Morris earned himself a chance to play for the state title. Then, after shooting a two-day total of 158 at the state meet in Austin May 9-10, Morris earned the respect of his peers with a sixth-place finish overall.
Morris shot a two-round score of 156 (74/82) at the regional meet, but faced tougher competition in Austin. He shot an 81 the first day to find himself in 11th place, but dropped his score on day two by four strokes to a 77, moving his way up the leaderboard to sixth. While Morris said he enjoyed his first trip to the state meet at the Roy Kizer Golf Course, he is already planning a return trip next year.
Morris began playing golf at the age of just 5 years, and was shooting a 95 by the age of 7.
“I would pay for our round of golf and the attendant would say not to let my son slow play,” said Morris’ father, Phillip. “I would laugh and say, ‘He will shoot as good or better than 90 percent of your players, Sir.’”
Since that time, Morris has consistently been improving his golf game. He works with several different golf coaches, and is hoping his game will help him pay for college in another year.
When he isn’t golfing, Morris enjoys hunting and fishing. He is a good all-around athlete, but has made the decision to focus his efforts on golf. So far the work appears to be paying off, and Morris has represented Nixon-Smiley well.
“We are extremely proud of Nathan and the way he represented not only Nixon-Smiley High School, but the entire community as a whole,” said Athletic Director Carlton McKinney. “Congratulations, Nathan, on a great accomplishment.”
