Girl Scouts from Troop 559 have been planning a trip to Europe for the past two years. They will be traveling there next summer, June 2012. They chose 2012 because it is the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts.

The girls will visit England, France, and Switzerland. They will have the opportunity to visit two of the four World Girl Scout Centers and will participate in special Girl Scout ceremonies at each of the world centers.

Most of the girls in Troop 559 have been in Girl Scouts since they were in kindergarten and the majority of them have been in the same troop all that time. They were recently certified in the Girl Scouts high adventure program where they were trained in minimal impact camping, leave no trace, water filtration, and special cooking skills.

They recently took a backpack trip to Lost Maples State Park to demonstrate their skills. They can be seen walking with their backpacks on the hike and bike trails in Floresville, where they are getting conditioned for their trip.

In this group of girls, five have earned their Bronze Award, two have earned their Silver Award, and one has earned her Gold Award, which is the highest award earned by a Girl Scout. Three of these girls are actively working toward their Gold Awards.

The cost of the trip for each girl is $3,047. They have been working concession stands for local organizations, holding rummage sales, sponsoring dinners, and doing odd jobs to earn money for their trip. They are all about halfway to their goal. They are seeking support from the community.
