Library plans summer reading program
The Sarah Bain Chandler Public Library of Stockdale, in conjunction with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, is sponsoring the 2011 Texas Reading Club this summer. The theme for this year is “Dig Up A Good Book!” The program’s opening day will be Tuesday, June 7.
The Texas Reading Club is self-paced and fosters reading success by asking children to record titles of books they read from the local library. A certificate signed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry will be awarded to each reader who attains reading goals of 20 or more books during the eight-week program. The emphasis is on having fun with books during the summer school vacation.
Story readers and guests will donate their time each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Library Craft Room and Reading Room. Hands-on activities also will be conducted during this time. All library activities are free.
The library’s annual coloring contest is open to those using their library cards during the summer reading session. Volunteers will be serving in the duties of the library functions and new readers are encouraged to apply for a library card.
The eight-week program, operated by volunteers and financed by the city of Stockdale, will end Thursday, July 28, with an end-of-the-year party held in the Library Craft Room. Those joining the 2011 Texas Reading Club Libraries: “Dig Up A Good Book!” and the volunteers will be honored on that day.
The Sarah Bain Chandler Public Library is located at 604 West Main St. in Stockdale.
