Seven Stockdale High School students represented the school in UIL Academic State competition May 5-7 at the University of Texas at Austin, with the calculator team earning second place at state.

Individually, Gerald Gonzalez placed fourth; Clayton Lynn, sixth; Moises Holguin, seventh; and John Rogers, 17th. This current team has earned back-to-back district championships as well as this year’s regional championship. The team hopes to continue this tradition and earn a trip back to state next year. Amy Thiede coached this team.

Katie Wiatrek, in her fourth appearance at state competition in computer applications, placed fifth, repeating last year’s placing. Based on the school records, Katie is the only individual in the history of Stockdale High to advance to state academically for four consecutive years.

Katie’s coach, John Martin, also coached the computer science team, which placed fourth at state May 5. Individually, Andy Cano placed eighth; Moises Holguin, 10th; Joe Bustos, 15th; and Gerald Gonzalez, 21st.

The computer science program has won 17 consecutive district titles. The 2011 group represents the fifth state-qualifying computer science team for Stockdale High.
