Robert Ray Salge, 86, of Karnes City, Texas, died on Sunday, May 8, 2011. He was born Dec. 26, 1924, in Coy City to Robert William “Bob” and Effie Roberts Salge.

Ray served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later married Dorothy Lee Edwards in Beeville on July 13, 1946. He worked in the oilfield as a driller and tool pusher his entire life. He drilled the first offshore oil well near Lake St. Clair in Ontario, Canada. He lived and worked throughout South Texas, Canada, and Louisiana before moving back to Karnes City in 1961.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his special friend, Lillian Zimmerman; a brother, Woody Salge; and a sister, Lillian Needham.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Kay Dziuk and husband Larry J. of Houston; his son, James Ray Salge and wife Patti of Karnes City; his brothers, Carlton James “Nook” Salge and wife Alice of Karnes City and Harroll “Cotton” Salge and wife Charlene of Lockhart; his sister, Gwendolyn “Chico” Rigby and husband Jerry of Florida; his grandchildren, Brett Dziuk and Samantha and Wes Porter; and his furry friend, Turd.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, May 14, at 10 a.m. in the Rhodes Funeral Home in Karnes City.

Interment followed in the Karnes City Cemetery in Karnes City.

Serving as pallbearers were Wes Porter, Brett Dziuk, Coley Salge, Hunter Salge, Cliff Salge, and Phillip Salge.

Honorary pallbearers were Vincent Moy, George Smolik, George Kowalik, Tommy Polasek, Mike Polasek, and Rudolph Polasek.
