FLORESVILLE -- Do you enjoy the big home and garden shows, but don’t like to travel to the “big city” to get ideas for making your home reflect your lifestyle and personality or to see what’s new?

Then you’re in for a treat, as the first-ever Floresville Home & Garden Show fills the Floresville Community Convention Center on S.H. 97 Sunday, May 22. The event, from noon to 6 p.m., will feature an array of vendors of everything to make your nest your own, as well as demonstrations on gardening and more.

“... we would like to invite everyone to come and spend a Sunday afternoon supporting the vendors,” said show Coordinator Diana Garza.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for senior citizens, and free for children 10 and under who donate a canned good each for the South Texas Resource and Assistance Center (STRAC).

The first 100 visitors will receive a free reusable bag and plant, donated by the Floresville Alternative School’s S.T.A.R.S. service-learning program.

Visit vendor booths displaying gardening and landscaping ideas and supplies, fountains, home décor, outdoor living items, gifts, and new products. Get ideas for your new kitchen, bath, pool, or other projects, or find a remodeler who can make your home dreams come true.

Among the vendors will be Floresville merchants Ruffled Feathers, Pfeil’s Home and Garden, and Trendy Treasures. RoBar Construction, Richardson Bros., the Floresville Electric Light & Power System, Build-Green Custom Homes, and H-E-B also will participate, along with Gary Pools, the Wilson County News, and Drama Kids International.

Some vendors will have products available for purchase.

A number of nonprofit organizations will participate, too, including the Boys & Girls Club of Wilson County, Camino Real MHMR, the American Cancer Society, and the Floresville Chamber of Commerce, to name a few.

Demonstrations will include:

•Dennis Hale of the Wilson County AgriLife Extension Office on plant problems from 12:30-12:45 p.m.; water conservation and landscaping, 1:30-1:45 p.m.; and lawn management, 3-3:15 p.m.

•Drama Kids International drama production, 12:50-1:20 p.m.

•Afternoon Upholstery’s chair weaving, 2-2:30 p.m., by Debbie Carter

•Cooper’s Garden Place, organic garden applications, 2:30-2:45 p.m.

•“20 plants you must have in your landscape,” by David Rodriguez of the Bexar County AgriLife Extension Office.

Concessions will be available to feed your body, after feeding your imagination with all there is to see and do.

“We are very excited to have the ... Home and Garden show,” said City Manager Andy Joslin. “... it will showcase some of our local businesses. We look forward to building on this year’s event and making it a great annual event.”

A roping event also will take place in the arena adjacent to the convention center, providing additional entertainment for participants.

The Floresville Community Convention Center is located at 600 S.H. 97 West in Floresville.

For more information on this event, call Diana Garza at 830-357-8110 or Carolyn Leal-Palacios at 830-391-1814.

That's great news that the crowds came. Vendors don't come back to shows that can't put people in front of them. Hats off to the citizenry for attending and supporting the show/center.
