Red Cross responds in wake of Midwest tornadoes

The American Red Cross is currently on the ground across the country responding to the latest series of tornadoes that struck the Midwest this past weekend.
On Saturday, May 21, a series of tornadoes swept through the state with damaging winds and hail statewide. The City of Reading in Lyon County was hardest hit by tornado damage. Extensive damage has to homes and buildings were reported and the City of Reading is without power.
•The Red Cross opened one shelter for the affected residents and will continue to provide food and shelter as needs continue.
Over the weekend, tragic storms ripped across Minneapolis affecting many communities. Multiple tornado touchdowns were reported in Washington County. It is estimated 20,000 customers are without power.
•Dozens of Red Cross volunteers, including health and mental health workers, are responding to this disaster, providing emotional support, food and relief supplies such as towels, diapers, baby formula, comfort kits and more to individuals and families in need.
•The Red Cross provided shelter for over 200 people in response to these storms.
A series of tornados touched down in Joplin destroying homes, buildings and a hospital. The damage caused gas leaks and fires leaving many residents without communication or power and prompted evacuations on Sunday, May 22nd. Multiple injuries have been reported.
•As of midnight last night, the American Red Cross has opened one shelter with over 100 overnight stays.
•The American Red Cross has deployed an Emergency Communications Response Vehicle to Joplin to help establish communications for Red Cross responders. In light of the damage, cell phone towers and communications have been unreliable
•Dozens of Emergency Response Vehicles have been mobilized to respond to this disaster.
•As severe weather is expected to continue through today, the Red Cross is focused on providing the affected residents with food and shelter.
•Residents are encouraged to register themselves on Safe and Well at this time.
