Offer condolences


Roger C. Bell, a longtime resident of Floresville, Texas, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 4:10 p.m. in Lubbock at the age of 80 years, 10 months, and 7 days. Roger was born July 7, 1930, in Austin to Clarence and Ethel Hudson Bell.

Roger graduated from Austin High School and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Roger proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, and was an insurance agent and the owner of Woolsey-Bell Insurance Agency in Floresville for many years. Roger married Helen Joyce Hart on March 26, 1960, in Austin.

Helen, Roger’s beloved wife of more than 41 years, preceded him in death on Dec. 21, 2001. Roger was a member of the Floresville Chamber of Commerce and the Floresville United Methodist Church, and was a founding member of the “Coffee Club” at Conoly-Herry Drug Store.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and his brother, Marvin Sanders.

He is survived by his daughters, Allison Hart Bell Shoemaker and husband Doug of Floresville, and Karen Joyce Bell Fred and husband Mark of Lubbock; his grandchildren, Ryan Layne Shoemaker, Andrew Ross Shoemaker, Kailey Michelle Shoemaker, Christopher Tyler Fred, and Kristin Taylor Fred; his niece, Sandra Washmon; and his nephew, Duane Sanders.

A visitation was held on Wednesday, May 18, from 5-8 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A funeral service was held on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Floresville United Methodist Church with Pastor Michael Mumme officiating.

Interment followed in the Floresville City Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Ron Thuney, Ryan Shoemaker, Andrew Shoemaker, Tyler Fred, Duane Sanders, and Mike Schielack.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were Gene Clements, Lawrence Jacobson, Jack Harrington, and Sam Strozier.

Memorials may be made to the Floresville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 217, Floresville, TX 78114 or to the Young at Heart Assisted Living Facility, 808 Main St., Wolfforth, TX 79382.
