Korus marks 40 years of rainfall reporting
For 40 years of collecting rainfall data, Andrew Korus of Stockdale (front) is recognized May 4 by (back, from left) Joe Baskin, HMT; Mark Lenz, SSH; and Steve Smart, OPL, of the National Weather Service during a special event in the Stockdale Nursing Center.
The Austin/San Antonio National Weather Service Office has commended Andrew Korus of Stockdale for 40 years of service in collecting daily rainfall data. Jan. 1, 2011, marked his 40th year. He was recognized in a special event May 4 at the Stockdale Nursing Center.
The Stockdale daily rainfall collection began in December 1940, and, as Stockdale’s fourth official observer, Korus took over the capacity on Jan. 1, 1971.
Korus is a cooperative observer, contracted by the National Weather Service to provide daily weather information to the local National Weather Service Office. This weather information is used in forecast verification, flood forecasting, and historical climate database.
Since its inception more than a century ago, the Cooperative Weather Observer Program has given scientists and researchers continuous observational data. Today, nearly 11,000 volunteer observers across the country contribute to the program, providing important daily reports on temperature, precipitation, and other weather factors, such as snow depth, river levels, and soil temperature.
Weather records become more valuable with age. Long continuous records provide an accurate picture of a locale’s normal weather and give climatologists and others a basis for predicting future trends.
According to a press release from the National Weather Service, “We deeply appreciate the service of the Cooperative Observers and especially Mr. Korus, and congratulate him on 40 years of dedicated service.”
