Elvira Hildegarde Bertha Zunker Schulze
Elvira Hildegarde Bertha Zunker Schulze, a lifelong resident of the Three Oaks community and Poth in Wilson County, Texas, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in the Regency Manor nursing home in Floresville at the age of 87 years, 5 months, and 23 days. Elvira was born Dec. 3, 1923, in Three Oaks to William Alfred and Adela Fritz Zunker.
She attended the Three Oaks School from first grade through eighth grade. At the age of 42, she received her GED, and earned a degree as a dietitian.
Elvira married Melton Benard Schulze of the Three Oaks community on Feb. 7, 1942, in the St. John Lutheran Parsonage in Poth. They were blessed with three children: two daughters, Floy Dean and Sandra Faye, and one son, Gary Clark.
Elvira and Melton began their life together farming the family land in Three Oaks. They lived in the Three Oaks community for the next 20 years until 1965, when they moved “to town” in Poth. In 1960, Elvira began a new career in the dietary department in the Wilson Memorial Hospital. After five years of working in the dietary department, Elvira received her GED. She then earned a dietitian degree from San Antonio College, working during the day at the hospital in Floresville and attending night school for two years. She became the dietitian at Wilson Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1988. In those days, the Food Service Department’s meals for patients and staff were prepared from “scratch.” She was famous for her “homemade” desserts, especially her doughnuts and fresh bread.
Elvira was preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings, Ervin Zunker, Henry Zunker, Irma Keller, Elsie Tieken, Harry Zunker, William Zunker, and Ella Russell.
She is survived by her beloved husband of more than 69 years, Melton Schulze of Poth; her children, Floy Dean Sekula and husband Raymond of Hot Springs, Ark., Sandra Smith and husband Donald of Hot Springs, and Gary Schulze and wife Kris of Cat Spring, Texas; her grandchildren, Brian Sekula and wife Kristen, Jeffrey Collin Sekula Sr. and wife Kellie, Gary Schulze Jr. and wife Mary, Patrick Schulze, David Smith, Michael Smith and wife Brianne, and Jason Smith; and her great-grandchildren, Jordan Alexandra Sekula, Kendall Michelle Sekula, Karston Cannon, Kristian Cannon, Jeffrey Collin Sekula Jr., Aleksandra May Marie Sekula, Harley Kirchner, Abigail Schulze, Cole Smith, Reed Smith, Klay Smith, Carson Smith, Victoria Smith, and Matthew Smith.
