It is unfortunate that we have to disseminate this advisory but for the protection of the citizens of San Antonio, Bexar County, and surrounding areas it has become a necessity.

The Sheriff’s Office is receiving reports from the Better Business Bureau of San Antonio that unknown persons are targeting unsuspecting and generous citizens of our community to donate to the Sergeant Kenneth Vann Memorial Fund. These individuals are scammers and thieves and in no way are they associated with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Crime Stoppers of San Antonio, any other Law Enforcement Agency or non-profit organization. The citizens of Bexar County and surrounding communities should know that the solicitation of funds by anyone who say the funds are for the Sergeant Kenneth G Vann Memorial Fund is a fraud. Anyone who encounters this type of solicitation should call their local law enforcement immediately.

Sheriff Ortiz stated “This is an absolute tragedy within a tragedy that the citizenry are subjected to these thieves and miscreants who are targeting the hearts of a community that supports law enforcement in a powerful way. We do not solicit funds over the phone, in person, or on the street corner”.

Funds can be donated by stopping by any Generations Federal Credit Union to the Kenneth G Vann Memorial Fund. Any 501c3 organizations can make donations to the 100 CLUB of San Antonio who have also set up a trust fund for the Vann family.

If you have any questions or information regarding these scams call Kristi Pena - Regional PR Manager for the San Antonio Office of the Better Business Bureau at 210.828.8752.
