Matthew Soliz was selected as the salutatorian of the Karnes City High School class of 2011.

Matthew is the son of Rene and Grace Soliz. After graduation he plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin in the fall to study electrical and computer engineering.

He plans to take one class this summer.

Matthew was involved in UIL cross-examination debate and extemporaneous speaking. He played football as well as other sports and also was a member of the high school band.

During his senior year, Matthew edited videos for the school’s televised morning announcements and also designed flash animations to go along with the video segments.

“I’ve had several big moments in my high school years,” Matthew explained. “Probably one of the ones that made me feel the best was when I heard that me and my partner Kevin Matula were advancing to the octo-finals at state. When you advance to the octo-finals, that is when you are guaranteed to get a medal. It was just a very exciting moment when we heard that we were advancing.”

Matthew said his family has been key to his academic success in high school.
