FLORESVILLE -- For the fourth time in as many years, the Floresville High School Tiger football team held spring football workouts, and wrapped things up with the annual Maroon and White game May 27.

The spring workouts are meant to give the team a head start toward next year’s regular season. It’s a great chance for the players and coaches to make changes, and to see how quickly the athletes pick things up.

Officially, the White team defeated the Maroon team this year by the score of 46-30. Points were not scored in the traditional sense, however, as the coaches awarded points based on a unit’s ability to meet specific goals. For example, the defense could score points by forcing a three-and-out, sacking the quarterback, or by holding the offense to a negative-yardage possession. On the offensive side of things, points came from achieving goals like racking up more than 10 yards on a single play, or by earning consecutive first downs. In the end, it wasn’t the scoreboard that mattered, but rather the knowledge and experience gained by the players and coaches.

Tiger quarterback Garrett Pollok completed two passes in the game for a total of 23 yards. Josh Barnard reeled in one for 17 yards, and Bobby Lusk pulled in the second for 6 yards.

Floresville worked three running backs throughout the game, and saw good things from Hector Villegas, Ruben Benavides, and Deron Taylor.

Villegas led the way with 55 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Benavides carried six times for 47 yards, though most of that came on a thrilling 45-yard touchdown scamper. Taylor looked good in limited work as he averaged nearly 8 yards per carry, running three times for 23 yards. The defensive efforts were led by John Handowski, Michael Ballard, and Chris Dreager.

The Tigers are coming off a disappointing 2010 season and will look to turn things around in the fall of 2011. The coaching staff has made a number of changes, and it should be interesting to see how Floresville fares come August.
