1934-2011

Rev. James “Jim” Edward Hoelscher died on Saturday, May 28, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas, at Padua Place after a long illness.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1934, in Poth to parents Adolph Theophil “Pappy” and Aurelia Mary “Leah” (Laake) Hoelscher. He was preceded in death by his parents.

James attended schools in Poth and Floresville as well as St. John’s Seminary in San Antonio. He then went on to graduate from the North American Pontifical College in Rome, Italy. On Dec. 20, 1958, he was ordained in Rome as an archdiocesan priest for San Antonio.

Father Hoelscher is survived by his brother, Donald Hoelscher and wife Rose Lee; nephew John Hoelscher and wife Debbie; nieces Deanna Hoelscher and husband Steve Kelder, Gretchen Stepke and husband Tim, and Julie Weber and husband Tom; and nine great-nieces and -nephews.

He served as a priest for more than 52 years in numerous parishes in San Antonio and the surrounding community, including Blessed Sacrament, St. Lawrence, Holy Spirit, St. Luke’s in Loire, and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Leming. He taught at Assumption Seminary and for more than 20 years, he served at Holy Cross High School as a teacher, chaplain, and principal.

Known as a superb speaker, Father Hoelscher was a voracious reader, especially of Catholic history and mystery books by English writers. His homilies often highlighted three distinct subjects that he masterfully wove together into one common theme. He greatly enjoyed traveling, eating a variety of cuisines, and playing cards, especially Tarock with fellow priests.

Visitation was held Tuesday, May 31, at 5 p.m. in the Angelus Funeral Home in San Antonio. A rosary and wake service followed at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass was held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in San Antonio.

Interment followed in the Holy Cross Cemetery in San Antonio.

Memorial donations may be made to an Archdiocesan Burse to be set up in the name of Rev. James E. Hoelscher. Send contributions to Pastoral Center, Attn. Burses, P.O. Box 28410, San Antonio, TX 78228.

The family wishes to extend their thanks for the devotion and care of the Padua Place staff and the Missionary Servants of St. Anthony.
